Texas Monthly Revisits Charles Whitman, David Koresh

It is hard to believe that the fifteenth anniversary of the burning of the Branch Davidian compound is upon us next month.

The inimitable Texas Monthly magazine dips back into dark Texas times with a couple of teaser abstracts on the Branch Davidians and David Koresh along with UT Tower sniper Charles Whitman. Unfortunately, you need to be a subscriber to access the entire articles.

You can, however, see a full photo slideshow on the 51-day Mt. Carmel standoff; a video with FBI negotiator Byron Sage; and an archival feature entitled The Ghosts of Mount Carmel written by Michael Hall about the survivors returning to Waco.

You do not need a subscription for these last three features. But why not support one of the best magazines in the world that just so happens to feature a lot of true crime?
Also, for the definitive story on Charles Whitman, please pick up former In Cold Blogger Gary Lavergne's A Sniper in the Tower. It is my second favorite true crime book of all time only after Vincent Bugliosi and Curt Gentry's Helter Skelter.
